La Selva CBC Celebrates 21TH Year

Summary

The 21th edition (1985-2005) of the La Selva Christmas Bird Count. The count was held on freday, December 30, 2005. Count totals are 325 species and 6372 individuals. The twenty one year cumulative species total now stands at 493 with the addition of two new species from this year's count: Pionus menstruus (Blue-headed Parrot) , and Phainoptila melanoxantha (Black and Yellow Silky Flycatcher). Each year the count takes place over a twenty-four hour period (00:00 hours to 24:00 hours) and is conducted inside a 7.5 mile radius circle (177 square miles). The La Selva count circle is centered 1.7 miles south of the old Magsasay ranger station on the Peje River.

Sixty-seven people participated in the count, and most of these were from Costa Rica. Participants included representatives of various organizations (OTS, MINAE-ACCVC, UNA, UCR, Rara Avis, Costa Rican Ornithological Society, and Naturalist Guides of Sarapiquí) as well as independent guides and amateur birders. Participants were organized into seventeen parties. therteen parties walked the La Selva trails, and one boated the Sarapiquí and Puerto Viejo rivers. Another parties surveyed other areas including the Braulio Carrillo Corridor between the 500 m and 1070 m transect trail shelters and around the El Ceibo Ranger Station, Rara Avis Lodge, El Plástico , and along country roads. A total effort of 167.3 hours of observation and 136.36 miles of travel resulted in 327 species and 6372 individuals recorded.
