Extreme Firefighters Challenge On May20th, the first edition of "Extreme Firefighters Challenge - Sarapiquí 2012" took place as part of the celebration of the first five years of the fire station in that county. In order to promote the sports and fellowship in the institution, Fire Department personnel around the country participated in a competition in two disciplines: rafting and cross country.
14 teams of 6 members competed in a 40-mile route that started at Hacienda Pozo Azul on the Sarapiquí River, continued through the Marañón path, within the La Selva Biological Station, and ended at the sports plaza of Puerto Viejo.
The team called M-37 Unit, of the Santa Cruz Fire Department, Guanacaste, won first place with a time of 2:17:48.
The event had a total of 84 participants, all members of the Fire Department, both in administrative and operational labors. The Director of Fire Department, Engineer Héctor Chávez León, participated as part of a team, as well as headquarters and the National Fire Academy in San Jose, and firefighters from around the country like San Vito, Santa Cruz, Sarchí, Siquirres, Puriscal Tibás, La Cruz, Pavas, and Barrio Luján, among others.
The activity was the result of the work of over 10 months of logistics by the Fire Department staff, with the support of public and private institutions, such as La Selva Biological Station of OTS, whose Sarapiquí’s facilities have housed the operations of the Fire Department during the last 5 years. .
