Home Institution Opportunities

  • Study Abroad Office-This is your best source of information on scholarships and grants that are available to you at your home institution.  Often, this office has established travel grants for students who have been approved to travel abroad. Make sure to speak with your study abroad advisor to ask about opportunities and application deadlines.
  • Financial Aid Office-It is important to notify your financial aid advisor of your plans to study abroad. Different campuses have different policies on how a study abroad experience applies to your financial aid (whether it be federal, state, institutional, or private funds).  Under Federal law your aid from the US government is required to "travel" with you but your home institution may have special requirements for this to occur.
  • Department Chair or Faculty Advisor of Your Major-It is always good to check with your Departmental Chair or Faculty Advisor as there are often funds that have been set aside to support study abroad or research opportunities for students in the department.

OTS Funding Sources

OTS is committed to providing opportunities to all eligible students interested in participating in our programs. We have dedicated a substantial amount of monies to provide partial scholarships to students who demonstrate the need for financial support. Our grants are self-funded and are not tied into financial aid offered by Duke University. Students from OTS Consortium schools will be given preference but all qualified students can apply. The following endowed scholarships help support our aid offerings.
  • The Christopher Davidson and Sharon Christoph Scholarship - established to provide aid assistance to U.S. Minority or Latin American students.
  • The Roger Perry Minority Scholarship - established to provide financial assistance to U.S. minority students seeking support for semester and summer programs in Costa Rica.
  • Ravi Thackurdeen Memorial Scholarship Fund – Established by OTS to honor Ravi Thackurdeen, Spring 2012 Global Health, to provide financial support to OTS undergraduates who demonstrate Ravi’s passions and aptitude, especially in the areas of ethnobiology and global health.

How to Apply:

The scholarship application will be made available to you after you have been accepted into an OTS program. To apply, you must have the scholarship application completed by your  home institution's financial aid office and submit a personal statement explaining your financial situation and the amount of aid you are requesting. When we receive your completed application, our review committee will consider the request for funding and a decision will be made within two weeks.

Please note that aid is offered on a rolling basis so it is important to apply early.  Application deadlines are as follows: March 15th for summer programs, April 15th for fall semester programs, and November 15th for spring semester programs.  Late applications will not be considered.
